Mom turns to TikTok for help after her 3-year-old son locks her in the bedroom

Never turn your back on a 3-year-old child.

It's a hard-won lesson for a mother who let her attention wander “for just a second” before realizing her son had locked them both in his bedroom.

“Reason No. 50 million why you should…practice safe sex,” Mayah Hash said in a TikTok video with more than 20 million views while standing in her son Paxton's bedroom. (Warning: The video contains swear words.)

“I came here to get his dirty laundry and he closed the door behind me,” Hash said. “Why is this a problem? Let me leave the room.”

Hash walked over to the door, which had the knob missing, and jiggled the shaft as Paxton giggled.

“Oh!” Hash said. “I can’t leave the room…where’s the doorknob? In the living room. Do you know how I know this? Because he…threw them at me earlier.”

“Go get it,” Paxton persuaded his mother in the video.

“Honey, I’d love to,” Hash said. “I can’t open the door, my love.”

She added: “All joking aside, I really don’t know what to do. “We're really locked in this room.” As Hash shook the doorknob, Paxton stood behind his mother.

“Just shake it,” he suggested. “Come on…try it.”

“Break it up, baby,” Hash joked. “Wrap it.”

Hash, a 24-year-old single mother from the Portland, Oregon area, tells she panicked.

“It was 7 p.m. and even though we had already eaten dinner… we would have needed water or the toilet at some point,” Hash says.

Earlier that evening, Paxton had removed his doorknob.

“He was mad at me because he wanted to play on his iPad and I said he had enough screen time in the day,” she says. “He threw the handle at me and I said, 'How did you break that?'”

Hash remembers looking at the item on the floor and thinking, “I'll fix that someday.” Hours later, having forgotten about it, Hash went into Paxton's bedroom to collect his laundry – and heard it Door closed behind her.

“I turned around, held the basket and said, 'Oh no,'” Hash says. Paxton chuckled to himself.

Hash called her mother, who lives in Idaho. “I was having a nervous breakdown and Paxton comforted me by saying, 'It's okay, Mom,' and then he started playing with his toys again,” Hash says. “He was so encouraging.”

As a “fiercely independent” person, Hash doesn’t feel comfortable asking others for help. “It could be a mother thing,” she says. “It's so ingrained in me that I have to figure everything out myself. (I would rather call the fire department than call a friend.”)

However, when Hash realized that the front door of her rental apartment was locked, she didn't want to risk forced entry.

“We were not in immediate danger … and could have waited until my building maintenance department opened,” she says.

Hash learned from TikTok that something like this was happening.

  • “My daughter did this and I unscrewed the hinges with a Barbie shoe.”

  • “Believe it or not, this has happened to me THREE times.”

  • “It’s okay, my 3 year old locked me out of my car this morning.”

  • “My son locked me outside on the balcony.”

  • “I was way too traumatized when my kids did that, and now I've put the lock… on the other side. So they never lock me up or her again or anything.”

Hash says she and Paxton were locked in the room for nearly two hours.

“I ended up pushing a coat hanger into the door and wiggling it around,” Hash says. “It took about five minutes” to free himself.

“Looking back, I can laugh,” Hash says, adding, “I learned to fix things as soon as they break.”
