5 Fixes for WhatsApp Desktop Not Downloading Images

  • First, check your internet connection. Then force quit and restart the WhatsApp desktop app.
  • Enable automatic media download. Then check how much internal storage is left on your Mac or Windows PC.

Fix 1: Check Internal Storage on Mac and Windows

If you can't download images using WhatsApp Desktop, first check the available internal storage on Mac or Windows PC.

On Mac

Step 1: Open System settings on your Mac and then click Generally from the left menu.

Step 2: Click on storage and check how much storage space is left on your Mac.

You can click the “i” icon next to what is taking up the maximum storage space on your Mac. Then select and delete the contents of that particular data category.

WhatsApp offers you the ability to automatically download any type of media file on your Mac and Windows PC. If you are still facing the same issue, you can try turning on automatic media download again.

On Mac

Step 1: Open Whatsapp on your Mac. Press that Arrow symbol in the upper left corner and then select Settings.

Step 2: Scroll down and click Automatic media download. Then click the checkbox next to Pictures.

Step 3: Go back to your chats and check if the issue is resolved.

On Windows

Step 1: Open Whatsapp and click Settings icon in the bottom left corner.

Step 2: Click on storage and enable automatic downloads for Pictures.

On Mac

Step 1: Open System Preferences and click Privacy & Security in the left menu.

Step 2: Scroll down on the right side and click Files and Folders.

Step 3: Click the arrow next to WhatsApp. Then click the switch next to the Downloads folder to enable access.

Step 4: Close the window and open WhatsApp to check if the problem is resolved.

On Windows

Step 1: Open Settings and click Apps from the left menu.

Step 2: Click on Installed apps. Then click three dots next to WhatsApp and select Expanded options.

Step 3: Scroll down and check which storage drive on your computer has download access.

Fix 4: Run the Windows Store app troubleshooter

Step 1: Open Settings on your Windows PC and then click Troubleshooting.

Step 2: Click on Other bug fixes.

Step 3: Scroll down and click Run next to Windows Store apps. Continue following the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Step 4: Once the process is complete, open WhatsApp and check if the problem is resolved.

Fix 5: Log in to WhatsApp again

On Mac

Open Whatsapp on your Mac. Press that Down arrow icon and then select Log out.

On Windows

Step 1: Open Whatsapp and then click Settings in the bottom left corner.

Step 2: Click on profile and then select Log out.

Based on your device, log in to WhatsApp again and check if the issue is resolved.

Update the WhatsApp desktop app

For a bug-free experience, you can try installing a new version of the WhatsApp desktop app on your Mac or Windows PC. This should help download the images sent by your contacts.

If that doesn't work either, switch to WhatsApp Web.
