Federal funding available for outdoor recreation space in Maryland communities

The Land and Water Conservation Fund provides up to $1.5 million for qualifying projects

Land and Water Conservation Fund logoThe Maryland Department of the Natural Resources is now accepting preliminary federal applications Land and Water Conservation Fund funding program. Under this program, local governments with qualifying projects can apply for $50,000 to $1.5 million to create new outdoor recreation spaces, revitalize existing parks and create connections between people and nature.

The department will accept applications until June 28, 2024. Potential applicants will be invited to a webinar on April 23 at 12 p.m. to learn more about the process. DNR reviews preliminary applications and invites the highest scoring applicants to prepare a final application package to submit to the National Park Service.

Municipalities and counties that meet the requirements can then apply for up to 50% of the corresponding support from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Local matching funds may include funds received by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Open Space program – Local or Community parks and playgrounds programs.
