Tom Aspinall claims UFC star Jon Jones was 'wise' to avoid duel last meeting: 'He doesn't want that'

UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall doesn't blame Jon Jones for not having a face-off with him.

Aspinall and Jones met at the Arnold Sports Festival. There the two talked, as Aspinall wanted to plan a future fight with the two, but “Bones” didn't seem particularly enthusiastic and didn't make any push for the possible fight.

According to Aspinall, it was smart that Jones didn't come to the face-off as it didn't force him to have to fight him now.

“I wanted to compete,” Tom Aspinall said on The MMA Hour. “Jon is smart, you know? …Jon won't say anywhere – you can't find it, it's not out there – that he's going to fight me. He won't say it publicly anywhere. He won't say it. You can't find a clip, a quote, anywhere of Jon Jones saying, 'One day I'm going to fight Tom Aspinall and I'm going to bloody slow him down.' That's what I'm going to do.' That does not exist. He doesn't want any proof anywhere that he agrees to a fight with me because he doesn't want to do that again.

“He doesn’t want to throw a faceoff because it encourages a potential fight. When I ask him, “Jon, are we doing it?” He won't say, “Absolutely.” “Let me get Stipe out of the way and we'll do it.” Instead, he'll say, “Oh, maybe one day.” Because he doesn't want the quote “One day we will fight.” It’s super smart.”

Of course, Jon Jones was looking to secure his first heavyweight title defense against Stipe Miocic. That means Aspinall may have to defend his interim title next and could lead to a rematch against Curtis Blaydes.

Tom Aspinall says Jon Jones fight doesn't “define” him.

Since Jon Jones doesn't show much interest in Tom Aspinall, the Brit doesn't care if the fight doesn't take place.

Although Aspinall wants to fight Jones, he says it won't hurt his career or his legacy if it doesn't happen.

“To be honest, I don’t spend my days thinking about Jon Jones,” Aspinall said. “Contrary to what people think, I'm not desperate for it. This fight does not define my career. It would be great, it would be nice, but I have other ways to prove myself. I will continue to play this sport for at least five more years. At least. Minimum.”

So it would be great. If I get the fight, that's fantastic. But I don't think, 'Oh, look what Jon did!' That will never happen! Oh dear God!' That's Jon's business. Jon can do his thing. If we fight, great. If we don't, that's great too. All respect goes to Jon Jones, one of the GOATs in the sport.”

Aspinall earned a first-round TKO victory over Sergei Pavlovich in December to become interim heavyweight champion.
