UFC lightweight and BMF champion Justin Gaethje will face former UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway at UFC 300 this weekend. Given that both fighters are among the most compelling fighters to watch, the only issue fans seem to be facing is who to root for during the matchup. The fact that both fighters seem to be good friends, or at least like each other, is what makes the fight so bittersweet.

Justin Gaethje has been in the MMA scene for over 13 years. And during these years, the 35-year-old managed to build an incredible reputation and even earned the nickname “The Highlight”. But why was he given the battle name?

Justin Gaethje began his MMA career back in 2011. But before Gaethje switched to MMA, the 35-year-old had an outstanding career in wrestling. Gaethje became the first person to earn Division 1 All-American honors from the UNC program and even placed seventh at the 2010 Nationals.

Gaethje moved into MMA not long after and left audiences in the amateur scene in awe. He went 7-0 and won six finishes, helping him earn the nickname “The Highlight.” His professional MMA debut would cement his nickname as he would defeat Kevin Croom by knockout with an intense slam. While today Gaethje is best known for his striking power, earlier in his career his fighting style was completely different and relied primarily on his wrestling.

When Colby Covington gave Gaethje a different nickname

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby “Chaos” Covington is known for giving nicknames to fighters he doesn’t like. At one point, the beloved fighter who epitomized chaos, Justin Gaethje, was the target of the self-proclaimed “America’s Champ.”

During a recap of the UFC 274 event headlined by Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje, “Chaos” managed to come up with a nickname for the then-title challenger. During Covington's recap of the event, he coined the nickname “Duck Lip” for the UFC lightweight while warning Gaethje about getting into the octagon with “Chaos.”

The insult most likely stemmed from Gaethje's comments about Covington during a Nelk Boys podcast episode. He said, “We all heard what you said to the Nelk Boys, Gaethje,” Covington said. “And even if you're dumber than a sack of rocks, at least you're smart enough to know that if we ever got locked in a cage, Junior, I would beat you with all my might.”
