A 33-year-old motorcyclist is killed in an accident near New Castle in Wawa

According to Delaware State Police, a 33-year-old motorcyclist from New Castle died Thursday evening after his motorcycle struck a turning car near New Castle.

The man's name has not yet been released.

Police said the motorcyclist was riding a black Harley-Davidson south on South Dupont Highway (Route 13) past Frenchtown Road (Route 273) at 8:03 p.m. At the same time, a gray 2018 Mazda 3 turned from the northbound lanes of Route 13 into the parking lot of a Wawa at 117 S. Dupont Highway.

The Mazda passed in front of the motorcycle, which police said was traveling at an “apparently high rate of speed” in the center right lane without its lights on. According to police, the motorcycle crashed into the side of the Mazda's road and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle into the right lane of the highway.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the Mazda, a 16-year-old girl from New Castle, was not injured.

According to police, the area was closed for approximately three and a half hours and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Cpl. P. McAndrew at 302-365-8486 or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
