Softball puts Delaware State's winning streak in jeopardy


WASHINGTON (April 5, 2024) – Howard University Softball travels to Dover, Delaware to take on Delaware State (DSU) in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play. The Lady Bison extend their eight-game winning streak to three games, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 6) at 1 p.m., followed by a start on Sunday (April 7) at noon.

HU leads the series 27-19, which dates back to 2006. Howard has won five straight against Delaware State since the 2022 season.


This season, Howard holds a 24-7 record (8-1 MEAC) and enters the weekend on an eight-game winning streak.

After a 2-3 finish on opening weekend, the Bison snapped a career-best 11-game winning streak. Since losing in the MEAC opener at North Carolina Central (March 16), the Bison have won eight straight league games.

Overall, the team is batting a MEAC-leading .329, led by an outfielder Bianca Worthy (Goodyear, Arizona), who is batting .406 with 17 RBIs this season. Her efforts earned her MEAC Player of the Week honors three times.

Howard is also led by catcher/utility Thank you Hart (.325 BA & 19 RBIs), shortstop Sidney Fletcher (.298 BA, 20 RBIs and three HRs) and first baseman Kenna Higa (Honolulu), who is batting .338 with 19 RBIs and one home run this season. Junior catcher Alyssa Vasquez (Eastvale, Calif.) is batting .323 with 24 RBIs and one outfielder Maryn Jordan (San Diego) hit .447 with 12 RBIs.

On the mound, the Lady Bison have been excellent, allowing just a 3.17 ERA in 31 games played. The trio of Amelia Weber (Montclair, California), Mia Gonzales (Atwater, California) and Julia Holt (Tucson, Arizona) dominated the district and combined for 21 wins. Weber has a 10-3 record with a team-leading 61 strikeouts. Gonzalez holds a 7-1 mark with a 2.88 ERA in 18 appearances (11 starts), while Holt is 4-0 in 17 appearances with a league-leading five saves.


This season, Delaware State has a record of 10-16 (3-6 MEAC) heading into the three-game schedule against the Bison. They recently won the season series against Norfolk State 2-1.

The Hornets' star player is junior outfielder Uxua Modrego Lopez, who is batting .312 with 24 RBIs and four home runs.


The Lady Bison won their last series against Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).

On March 30, Howard won a doubleheader against UMES. HU opened with an 8-5 win before closing the day with a 10-2 win in five games.

The following day (March 31), HU defeated the Hawks 10-2 in six games to complete the season sweep.


Howard returns to The District for a three-game series against Coppin State on April 13-14. Saturday's (April 13) doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+, followed by a seven-inning contest on Sunday (April 14) at noon.
