Winter 2024 was defined by various micro-trends inspired by the “Mob Wife” aesthetic (see: XXL faux fur coats, chunky French tip nails). And now the latest look associated with this vibe is providing some serious hair inspiration.

Meet “Mob Wife Bob”

The Buzzy Chop, also called “Mob Wife Bob,” is inspired by him Scarfaceis Elvira Hancock, played by Michelle Pfeiffer in the film set in Miami in 1983. In the film, Pfeiffer's character wears her shoulder-length blonde hair in a down-swept bob, along with sleek, rounded bangs.

Actress Florence Pugh directly referenced the on-screen moment as she attended the opening of Tiffany's flagship store in 2023, and her makeup artist for the evening described the look as “Elvira from Scarface Vibes.” And now the styled cut is on the rise again, with TikTokers and tastemakers alike adopting the expressive look.

“The Mob Wife Bob is a classic, slightly layered bob haircut, but with lots of volume and sass,” says celebrity hairstylist and Alfaparf Milano ambassador Mark Townsend. “This bob is styled as if you've just had a great blowout – it's very full and has lots of movement.”

As the nostalgic “Do” peaks in 2024, it is not It was the first time that A-list celebrities were inspired by Pfeiffer's Scarface see.

“In the late '80s and early '90s, we saw this look a lot in movies and on runways,” says Townsend. “I'll never forget Naomi Campbell walking the Versace runway, arm in arm with her fellow supermodels, lip-syncing to George Michael's 'Freedom,' her bob bouncing with every step.”

In other words, the “mob wife bob” may be particularly hot now, but the look has been an It-girl staple for a long, long time.

How to style the flippy bob at home

The “Mob Wife Bob” cut is appropriate for a high-fashion runway, but Townsend says the voluminous look is easy to recreate at home.

“It’s a very classic bob haircut,” he says. “Cut the length about an inch below the chin so that it reaches the chin when styling. Add a few layers on top to add volume and movement while keeping the ends blunt.”

Townsend says the best part about the look is that people with the shoulder-length cut can easily recreate the look at home with just a few steps.

“This style requires volume, so start by applying volumizing mousse to damp hair—my favorite is the Hours Full-Time Plumping Mousse ($27)—and then blow-dry with a small round brush or your blow-dry brush of choice.”

Once your hair is completely dry, Townsend recommends rolling the ends inward—either with a styling brush or curlers—to create the bouncy flips that dance around the shoulders. Then let your hair cool for a few minutes to set the style.

Finally, Townsend amps up the volume and shine. “My secret for lots of volume is to spray Olaplex Dry Shampoo ($30) at the roots of your hair and then tease or backcomb it. What makes the “Mob Wife Bob” modern is a healthy shine. Finish with Alfaparf Milano Semi di Lino Cristalli Spray ($28) to add plenty of shine without weighing hair down.”

Et voilà.
