Waters shows speed in NASCAR debut

By Thomas Miles

Stateside Supercars star Cameron Waters will start his NASCAR Truck Series rookie race at Martinsville today from 22nd place on the grid.

Waters clocked a time of 19.762 in his only qualifying round over the historic but close half-mile “Paperclip.”

The Australian actually led for the first seven minutes of the session before falling back as his more experienced rivals found more time later in the session, but he was still faster than twelve others.

The ThorSport #66 TRADIE-backed Ford finished outside the top 20, 0.345 seconds behind pole-sitter and teammate Ty Majeski.

For reference, Shane van Gisbergen and Marcos Ambrose qualified 28th and 20th for their respective NASCAR Truck Series debuts at Indianapolis 2023 and Martinsville 2006.

Waters barely had time to get used to life behind the wheel of the truck, as there was only a half-hour practice session right before qualifying.

He showed impressive adaptability in this session, finishing 11th, just 0.194 seconds off the lead, the third highest Ford in his debut session.

In qualifying, Waters was the third driver to attack the half mile and the Supercars star initially stole the show.

Waters' time of 19.762 seconds was good enough to move the Australian to the top of the timesheets, 0.089 seconds ahead of Matt Mills.

After seven minutes had passed, Mills was the only car within two tenths of Waters.

Only after 10 minutes was TRADIE ThorSport Racing's number 66 Layne Riggs pushed out of the lead.

Riggs posted a lap of 19.502 seconds, 0.26 seconds ahead of Waters, who fell to 15th as many found more time with later runs.

However, after 30 minutes, Waters was still the third fastest Ford, with less than a tenth occupying the top six places.

After all drivers had completed their laps, Waters finished 22nd in the 34-car field.

The 2024 Long Johns Silvers 250 is scheduled to begin at 10.30am AEDT and will be broadcast on Fox Sports 506 or Kayo.
