Kayla Harrison expresses doubts about 'mental hurdle' to making bantamweight bow at UFC 300: 'Can I do it?'

Former PFL women's lightweight champion Kayla Harrison will cut 20 pounds to lightweight to face Holly Holm in her promotional debut at UFC 300.

It was announced that Harrison had signed with the UFC and would make her debut at UFC 300 against the former champion Holm. It was a huge fight for her, but the bigger story was the fact that she would be moving down to bantamweight, which Harrison said was a mental hurdle for her.

“To their credit, they didn’t beat around the bush,” Harrison told MMA Junkie about the UFC’s negotiations. “It was very clear that if you want to fight here, you're going to fight at this weight, and that was a big mental hurdle for me – just figure out, 'Can I do this?' Is that what I want to do? It's hard because most people don't know that I've been training twice a day since I was 12 years old.

“There was definitely a part of me that thought, 'Screw it!' You've done enough. Why would you spend the last part of your career trying to lose an extra 10 pounds? Why?' Then there was another part of me that said, “Well, we’re growing at the edges of our comfort zone, and that means you’re all in.” It can't get much more difficult than that.” You move up to a new weight class, you fight in the promotion and you fight the legend. That's it. You're either all in or you're not.' I liked that and I think it brings out the best version of me,” Harrison added.

Kayla Harrison isn't afraid to exhaust herself

Although Kayla Harrison has lost more weight, she doesn't expect it to affect her chin or her strength. Instead, she is confident that she can give her best and get a victory over Holm.

“I don’t think I’m going to lose anything,” Harrison said. “I think we will see the best version of me. I was disciplined. I got involved. I didn't skip any steps. I left no stone unturned. My team is fully involved, I’m fully involved, my family is fully involved and I think I’m about to really shine.”

If Harrison can get past Holm, the Olympic gold medalist could have a shot at the 135-pound title next time out.
