While Tony Stewart's drivers, including newcomer Josh Berry, are turning heads in the Cup races, Smoke himself is on a mission to score his first top fuel victory. Following in his father Nelson Stewart's footsteps, he keeps the family's racing flame alive, diving into all sorts of motorsports adventures, including NHRA, and filling in for his wife Leah Pruett. And since he leaves no chance, he quickly takes his hat off to his father for his support. In a touching tribute on social media to mark his father's 87th birthday, Tony Stewart shared how much his father's support meant to him throughout this wild ride.

Tony Stewart certainly knows how to annoy his father, but he doesn't hold back on the praise either

When Nelson Stewart got a little curious about getting into NHRA drag racing himself and wondered if he could handle a Super Comp car, Tony was quick to joke. As soon as his father asked the question, “Can I learn? [running a super comp car]?” Tony shot back, “I mean, damn, they can teach a monkey to fly a spaceship, so yeah, probably.” This joke made everyone laugh.

But all jokes aside: Tony holds his father in high esteem. As he celebrated his father's birthday on social media, the Stewart-Haas Racing boss didn't skimp on compliments, saying: Happy birthday, dad. Thank you for all your support over the years and for showing us all how to be a badass racer.”

In fact, Tony Stewart has always spoken openly about the enormous influence his father had on both his life and his racing career. Just last year, Tony explained in an interview: “If my father is a role model for what the rest of my life will be like, we will be fine. He's 85 and still drives a 3-quarter midget. That's why I still race with him a few nights a year in the TQ Series in Indiana. […] I use my father as an example. For example, if we told him he couldn't race anymore, he would immediately go downhill, but he's full of energy. He has a goal. He’s passionate about it and he loves what he does, so that’s exactly the path I’m taking.”

It turns out that Nelson Stewart isn't just a hero to his legendary son; The entire racing world has a soft spot for him. When Tony Stewart shared a birthday greeting for his father, the racing community was quick to join in and send lots of love and birthday greetings to Nelson Stewart.
