Cook Out 400 Track: Martinsville Speedway

Martinsville is an iconic half-mile route with almost no gradients, plenty of bumps and bangs and tight overtaking maneuvers. Still, there will be long stretches of green flag laps as the cars drift apart. It is a strenuous race as the short course requires constant braking and short bursts of speed as well as tire and brake management.

Pit stops and adjustments by the crew chief and pit crew are critical to success here as the track can change drastically over the course of the race and a bad pit stop on this short track can put a driver back in the crowded pack.

You will also see people trying to start from within in reboots. It's not uncommon for a driver to get stuck on the outside and lose several positions.

Cook Out 400 schedule

Practice takes place on Saturday at 4:35 p.m. ET, with qualifying immediately after at 5:20 p.m. The race takes place on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Top average finishes in the last four Martinsville races
*I determined the average finishes on the road course and superspeedways.

  1. Ryan Blaney 3.8
  2. Joey Logano 4.0
  3. Kyle Larson 7.0
  4. Chase Briscoe 7.0
  5. Ross Chastain 9.3

Best average placements (Richmond, Bristol, Phoenix)

  1. Martin Truex Jr. 4.3
  2. Denny Hamlin 4.3
  3. Brad Keselowski 5.0
  4. Christopher Bell 5.7
  5. Chris Buescher 6.0

Cook Out 400 head to head prediction

Ross Chastain -120 over Bubba Wallace

Richmond was the only track where Wallace finished ahead of Chastain this year, and he was only a few spots behind.

Wallace didn't have a good start this season, and I think we're getting a good price for that because Wallace finished ahead of Chastain in both races at Martinsville last year, but both finishes were within a few spots. I'll be siding with Chastain's current form in this race.

Cook Out 400 Top 10 Pick

Chase Briscoe at +105 has to be a game.

He finished 5th and 4th in both races last year and has the fourth-best average finish in the last four races here. He only has two top-10 finishes this season, but his average of 13th at Richmond, Bristol and Phoenix tells me he's close to the top-10 at a shorter track and that could be the week.

Cook Out 400 Manufacturer Winner Prediction

2 units Toyota +110
1 unit Chevy +245

Despite posting a top two average finishes in the last four races, the Fords have only won one race in the last seven here. I've done the same thing in the last few races and will do it again here.
