Diablo 4 players need to download this new Nvidia ray tracing driver

Brand new Download Nvidia GPU drivers has just been released, with this new update promising to optimize performance in Season 3 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Warzone, as well as Diablo 4 with ray tracing. In fact, Nvidia claims that you can triple Diablo 4's ray tracing frame rate at 4K if you enable DLSS in a certain configuration with this driver.

Nvidia is currently the undisputed champion of ray tracing in games, with the RTX 4090 being the best graphics card you can buy for the task. While we love the look of Diablo 4 with ray tracing, it severely impacted performance when it was first released, and Nvidia claims its new GeForce Game Ready 552.12 WHQL driver is specifically optimized for this.

Nvidia claims in the driver notes that “on average, performance at 4K in Diablo IV is multiplied by 3.1x with ray tracing and all other settings at maximum,” as long as you have both DLSS 3 frame generation and DLSS Activate Super Resolution on Performance mode.

The company points to a performance chart (below) that shows the frame rate going from an average of 46.6 fps without DLSS to 144.4 fps with DLSS enabled at 4K and a GeForce RTX 4090. However, keep in mind that DLSS 3 was already supported by Diablo 4 before this driver was released, and would have had a big impact even then – it's unclear how much of a difference the new driver makes.

Nvidia also has some performance charts for running the game at 2,560 x 1,440 with ray tracing and DLSS 3 frame generation enabled, as well as the DLSS Super Resolution on Quality mod. With this configuration, every desktop GPU will achieve a playable frame rate in the current battery. The lowest result comes from the RTX 4060, which averages 70 fps, compared to 31.2 fps without the help of DLSS.

While these numbers are good, they do show the high hardware requirements required to enable ray tracing in this game. A new GPU like the RTX 4060 can only run it if the AI invents frames and upscales the resolution. We like Nvidia's AI and frame generation technology, but it's a shame that it's so desperately needed. Even the mighty RTX 4090 only manages an average of 46.6 fps in this game with ray tracing if it doesn't have the help of DLSS.

The frame rate of the Nvidia Diablo 4 ray tracing driver is 1440p

The other two main optimizations for the new driver affect the Call of Duty series, with your GeForce RTX rig now set up to run Season 3 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III as well as Call of Duty: Warzone. Nvidia also boasts about DLSS performance in these games: Call of Duty: Warzone achieves an average of 194.4 fps on the GeForce RTX 4070 with DLSS 3 frame generation activated and DLSS Super Resolution is set to quality mode.
