Road Closures Announced for 2024 NASCAR Chicago Street Race – NBC Chicago

0

Chicago and NASCAR officials unveiled a new transportation plan for this year's NASCAR Chicago Street Race, the second summer street race to be held in the city.

This year's event, scheduled for July 6-7, will include an abbreviated schedule of closures, officials said, citing “lessons learned from last year.”

According to officials, the new schedule is six days shorter than the previous race, with only 19 days needed for setup and teardown, compared to 25 days in 2023.

However, there will be numerous road closures, parking restrictions and pedestrian diversions in connection with the event.

“For the second year, the City of Chicago is working with NASCAR to plan and execute the 2024 race to minimize disruption to residents and visitors,” Jose Tirado, executive director of Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), said in a statement. “Safety is our top priority and OEMC will help monitor all racing activities leading up to the event, during the race weekend and after the event to coordinate city resources.”

Officials noted that while many roads will be closed, “all businesses and residences will remain accessible during track construction, the race weekend and the breakdown.” There will also be adjustments in local public transport due to the closures.

Access to popular locations such as Buckingham Fountain, Butler Field and Lower Hutchinson Field is expected to remain open “with minimal restrictions.” Maggie Daley Park, the Cancer Survivor's Garden and the museum campus will also remain open throughout the event, officials said.
